I am just back from Wolverhampton’s Flip 2009 festival after three days in my old West Midlands hunting ground.
There was the usual mixed bag of goodies on show, retrospectives from Glasgow’s Axis Animation and ArthurCox, regional showcases and international screenings. The introduction at the impressive (if empty) Millenium Point in Birmingham was a little on the down side due to the ‘economic climate’ and very dour panel members. But after picking ourselves of the floor and bandaging our wrists, the flavour of the rest of the festival was far more jolly.
The screenings were cleverly compiled and well attended even though they were at odd times, (sandwiching the weaker parts of the program) early morning and late afternoon. The rest of the content varied wildly. Highs for me were the entertaining interview with Axis Animation head honcho Richard Scott and Saturdays Personal Views which introduced the largely student attendees to some true classics of animation thanks of The Brothers McLeod (who also had a hand in the promotional literature).
Was it worth £25? Well to be honest YES! It was a well considered regional event with a good attendance from local companies – I saw people from ‘The Character Shop’, ‘The Brothers McLeod’, ‘PS Creative’, ‘Sumo Dojo’, ‘Second Home’ and a number of the regions universities. Because of the venues size, there was nowhere for any of the guests to hide after their events, and a lot on networking seemed to be going on both company to company and student to company.
I’d like to thank Peter and the team for a great warm up to the much larger and well funded BAF and Encounters festivals – coming up over the next few weeks.
View the video on this page it has some phenominal animation and incredible effects from Tyson Ibele a 21 year old animator and self proffessed ‘animation savant’ (which I’m glad to say he measures up to very well!).
I am in many ways very jealous of him for the level of professionalism and obvious tallent he shows at his age!!! I wish I was half the animator he is when I was 21.
this is an incredibly cool new reel from Blur! Featuring a host of highlights of their work over the past few years. It’s been available for a whilem but I missed it until recently.
Process animation can be a dull and labourious task for any character animator to perform, but the client and creative team spiced this one up to produce a fun spin on the recycling ideal. The whole film was produce in five weeks (okay we worked weekends and evenings – but it’s still an achievement). The voiceover and final script were not available until the final seven day run of production making things particularly tight. All sequences were produce with a longer overrun than the usual 12 frame handles to allow for adjustments in the script. The final film is here…

The launch of proanimateUK has suffered a 7 day delay due to the fact I overran on a modelling project deadline (very unprofessional). I’m happy with the results especially as I wouldn’t describe myself as a modeller! I have single handedly produced 9 classic cars for I Love Dust, for an up to now secret project. This one is a Riley 1.5 RMC 1949 Roadster – only 500 ever built!
Anyway, this is the first of many posts I’ll be placing up here, along with work examples and images to #inspire and provoke! Please add us to your blog list or favorites so you can see when we’re updated.
Dont forget following a bout of swine flu, the #website will be functional next week!!! www.proanimateUK.com
